PROJECT SUMMARY

How do you re-launch a 24-year-old game that has been completely revamped into something new and innovative? Hyping it with an app that gets you into the game before it's live.

How do you re-launch a 24-year-old game that has been completely revamped into something new and innovative? Hyping it with an app that gets you into the game before it's live.

EA came to North Kingdom to help create an app that would hype up a completely new take on Need For Speed. In the app, users were able to already start customising their cars for the game using real car models, accessories and decals that would be available in the game. Once the game launched, users would be able to access their custom cars already. Why was this ground breaking? Because the app used real parts from the game, but not the game engine.

JOURNAL & LEARNINGS

What held the work together.

What held the work together.

Oh, where do I start on this project… it was a complicated one, and I actually joined in very late into the production process- right at the moment when the leadership team went on summer vacation. It was the beta review, but the app was more in an Alpha stage and since the app shipped before the game, many of the 1000s of car elements were not completed yet. I can't speak for the earlier half of the project, but my clear goal was to get this project over the finish line in time. My role as EP evolved entirely into looking at streamlining workflows, assessing team and who exactly we needed in the door to finish- and then solve some issues that android was throwing us. We had a team working across timezones, so there was no stopping. In the last month of development before launch we managed:

  • Get the app from pre-alpha to launch ready

  • Streamline the workflow of inputting element changes from EA's engine format into ours

  • Fix unforeseen issues with how our back-end handled queries from android devices

  • AND LAUNCH ON TIME with a team that was largely added for vacation coverage.

PRODUCTION NOTE

Sometimes projects just don't come together as planned, and sometimes it's up to being the cheerleader that can rally the team and get everyone working together. There is no use in rehashing the problems when the requirement is just to keep running forward.
